Sincerely,
Bewitched

Dear Bewitched,

As long as we are living, there is time to change our lives. Astrology, mysticism, séances, horoscopes, palm reading, witchcraft, etc. are all sinful. God condemned that behavior in the Old Testament (Isa 47:13-14). King Saul was put to death by God for seeking a woman that practiced divining (1 Chr 10:13). Any Jew that was found visiting a ‘medium’ or ‘spiritist’ would be cut off from His people (Lev 20:6). When someone became a Christian, they confessed sorcery as evil, and many of them burned their books of the magical arts (Acts 19:18-20). If we want wisdom, we should seek it from God (Jas 1:5).

You mentioned that you did it just for fun and that you didn’t realize the implications. Many sins are that way, but that doesn’t excuse the sin. If you are driving down the highway and fail to note the speed limit… ignorance won’t stop the police officer from giving you a ticket. When mankind makes choices in ignorance, those choices still affect us (1 Pet 1:14). The way to receive forgiveness is to turn to the Lord, and He will give you forgiveness. Read “Five Steps To Salvation” for exactly what it takes to be forgiven.

I have a very interesting question, and I’m hoping you can help. I know the Bible says you shouldn’t mess with spirits, and fortune telling is sinful. However, what if someone didn’t ask for this gift? I know it says no one knows the future but God, but what if He gave a gift to someone, and they were using it for good? And what about Ouija boards? I’ve always been taught they are of the devil. One last thing, I’m from the south, and I’ve heard a lot about conjurers. In fact, as a child, my grandfather visited one to get a growth removed, and it worked. This woman was a christian and claimed it was a gift from God and not sinful. Is this sinful and of the devil? I am, by the way, very superstitious; however, I do believe the Bible is clear on the boundaries that should not be crossed. Sorry for being so lengthy, but I believe there’s a lot of people asking the same things.

Sincerely,
Magically Minded

Dear Magically Minded,

The dictionary defines ‘superstition’ as ‘a widely held but unjustified belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event, or a practice based on such a belief’. Superstition means that you are placing trust in the supernatural power of a rabbit’s foot, not walking under ladders, four-leaf clovers, Ouija boards, etc. This is always wrong. We are supposed to place our trust in God (Ps 56:11), and God has clearly said that He doesn’t give people the gifts of fortune telling; all these things are of the devil. Even if a conjurer removed your grandfather’s growth, being a conjurer is still sinful. There are lots of sinful things that have short-term benefits… but long-term consequences.

Superstition is a mild and socially acceptable form of witchcraft or divining. There is no difference between trusting in a lucky coin and trusting in the astrological tables. Astrology and horoscopes are wrong (Deut 4:19, 2 Kgs 23:5); witchcraft and magical arts are wrong (Acts 19:19). Superstition falls into the same category as those practices.

Surprise Me

Dear Surprise Me,

One reason she was so scared was because once she realized that the man who had hired her to conjure up a ghost was King Saul, she feared for her life. Saul had previously cast out all the mediums from the land (1 Sam 28:3). The other likely reason was that she had never actually seen a ghost! Mediums and sorcerors were charlatans back then just as much as they are today.

Dear Wic-can’t,

Burn them. Do exactly what the christians in Ephesus did. In Acts 19:19, there were people just like you that had once practiced magical arts. When they converted to Christ, they stopped their practices and burned their books. That is exactly what you should do. You’ll have a fresh start and the relief that only a clean break from evil can give.

Leviticus 19:28 said, “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.” Why don’t I hear too many churches preaching against putting tattoos on your body?

Sincerely,
Unmarked

Dear Unmarked,

The Old Testament strictly forbade tattoos (Lev 19:28). God was so adamant about it because cutting your flesh and tattooing were common practices of pagan cultures (1 Kgs 18:26-28). Tattooing was a religious practice closely tied to Baal and other idols.

In the New Testament, we are given no specific command against tattoos. It is valuable, however, to see that for a very long time tattoos have had a negative connotation. As a christian, there are many things that we can do but should think carefully about beforehand. Just because I can do something, doesn’t mean it is a good idea (1 Cor 10:23). Tattoos are permanent, and the decision to get one shouldn’t be taken lightly.

In American culture, tattoos can give a negative impression – especially if the tattoo is large or in a highly visible area. Some things to consider:

Tattoos are a deterrent for some employers. Are you willing to get passed over in a job application?

People will automatically form judgments about you based upon their first impression of a tattoo. Are you comfortable with being thought of as ‘the weird tatted-up guy’?

You must also consider what effects it will have long-term. Will you still want Tweety Bird on your shoulder when you are in the nursing home?

Are you ready to explain to your three-year-old why you have song lyrics on your bicep? Are you okay with your children wanting tattoos themselves?

Many tattoos change their shape, size, and even location with weight loss and gain. Are you ready for that “cute” bellybutton butterfly to become a condor when you get pregnant?

Many tattoos are of things that exude evil. Snakes, skulls, demonic signs, bad words, etc. are to be avoided at all costs.

We must always consider our influence and how it will affect others. God tells us to be wise and seek wisdom in our decisions (Pr 8:33). Whatever decision an individual makes, I recommend seeking outside counsel before getting something as permanent as a tattoo (Pr 11:14). It is not wrong for a christian to get a tattoo, but it certainly isn’t a decision to make lightly.

Sincerely,
Dead Or Alive

Dear Dead Or Alive,

When Saul removed the mediums from the land in 1 Sam 28:3, the word used means “put away or removed”. Saul cast them out of the land but didn’t necessarily destroy them. The word is ambiguous and leaves room for either expulsion or destruction. The witch of Endor believed that Saul would kill her for practicing her dark arts (1 Sam 28:9).

However, when Josiah removed the occult practitioners from the land, the word used in 2 Kgs 23:24 is a different Hebrew word that means ‘burn up or destroy’. This language is backed up by the Greek Septuagint, which translates the word as ‘to parch, wither’. The stronger language used seems to imply that Josiah put to death all the mediums and spiritists.

Weirded Out

Dear Weirded Out,

It is an infinitesimally small percentage of Americans that specifically refer to themselves as “Satan worshippers”… less than one percent. Satanic cults have existed in small pockets around the globe for years and have varying practices and beliefs that differ widely. Satanic practitioners hold one common belief – an admiration for rebellious and anti-establishment religious figures. Obviously, this religion is totally wrong and destructive to those who practice it. Satan is not a hero; he is the great villain and adversary of mankind – the word ‘satan’ actually means ‘adversary’. The Bible describes him as a “roaring lion seeking whom he may devour” (1 Pet 5:8).

Is the end of the world near? Is illuminati part of the antichrist? And who do you think the antichrist will be?

Seeing Codes

Dear Seeing Codes,

If the end of the world is near, we won’t know about it until it happens. God promises that the end of the world will come “like a thief in the night” (1 Thess 5:2). As for the Illuminati – read our article “Naughty, Naughty Illuminati” for further details on that particular organization.

The last part of your question deals with the antichrist. The antichrist is not any single individual, and contrary to popular religious fiction, the antichrist has nothing to do with the end of the world. The apostle John defined an ‘antichrist’ as ‘every spirit that does not confess Jesus as God’. An antichrist is anyone that is opposed to Christ and His teachings. The world is full of antichrists. 1 Jn 2:18 says that many antichrists exist. There are many false teachers and false religious figures that teach against Jesus – all of these are antichrists.

Dear Not An Illuminati,

The Illuminati was a Bavarian secret society formed in 1776 in Ingolstadt, Germany. Similar to the Freemason society, the Illuminati was a secret society with religious, as well as secular, elements to it. The truth is that the Illuminati and societies that diverged from the Illuminati died out years ago. It is the pop-fiction industry that has revived the term ‘Illuminati’ by creating conspiracy-theory books that portray the Illuminati as a surviving secret society bent on ushering in a new world order. These books make for exciting fireside reading, but they are still fiction. The Illuminati was a cult that existed in Europe several centuries ago, but it no longer is a factor in today’s society.

There is a large interest in vampires and magic in books and movies. It concerns me that they glorify witchcraft, including the Harry Potter books. Young people today can’t seem to get enough of this stuff. I have been told they are harmless books and movies, but when I watched a Harry Potter movie, it looked like kids doing black magic and having fun. The Bible tells us black magic is from the devil. When we allow our children to read these books and see these movies, aren’t we saying a little magic and vampires are okay when it is totally against God’s teaching?

Sincerely,
Not Bewitched

Dear Not Bewitched,

Harry Potter books, just like Halloween, can be sinful or harmless – it all depends on how we treat them (read “Costumes, Candy, And Controversy” for more on the subject of Halloween). If someone is treating the Harry Potter books as factual, or if they are glorifying Satan worship, occult practices, etc., that is obviously a problem. However, most readers are well-informed that the Harry Potter books are fiction (just like vampires) and aren’t how-to guides for life.

We must remember that the magic and occult practices that the Bible strictly condemned (1 Sam 15:23) were actually performed as a form of worship and a way to gain supernatural power. Harry Potter books are similar to watching a magician – everybody knows it isn’t real. This isn’t anything like the witchcraft condemned by the Bible. Those who practiced magical arts really did believe that they worked, and they really did believe there was supernatural power in their various spells and recipes. Every parent must make their own decisions regarding what is best for their children (and that includes what reading material they can handle), but it is unfair to say that Harry Potter books in and of themselves are a direct correlation to an occult lifestyle.

Grandma Grief

Dear Grandma Grief,

Hoodoo is wrong and is a warping of the Scriptures. Hoodoo is a term used for those who use the Bible like a magic spell book and protective talisman. Instead of treating the Bible like an instruction book for life (which is the right attitude – 2 Pet 1:3, Rom 1:16, Rom 10:17), Hoodoo treats the Bible like a lucky rabbit’s foot. If you open to the right Psalm or the read the proper verse at the proper time, you will be given special protection, health, or powers. This is totally opposite of what the Bible teaches. In fact, during the days of Paul, there were exorcists that tried this tactic. A group of Jewish exorcists saw that Paul had power from God, so they tried to talk and act like Paul in order to receive the same powers Paul had… it didn’t work (Acts 19:13-16). The Bible isn’t a tool to gain magical powers; it is a pattern for living (2 Tim 1:13). No matter how much money your grandmother gives and how regularly she attends services, this practice is sinful.

I sometimes pray with a group of people on a prayer line. The leader calls in from Africa. The man calls himself a prophet. No one has ever seen him.

The prophet is the leader of this prayer line. He seems to be a wonderful man of God with spiritual gifts… always praying in the name of Jesus. I’m very concerned and do not want to be deceived into any magic or anything that is against God.

He often asks the people who are having issues to bring oil, water, white handkerchiefs, stones, garments, shoes, rings, pictures, honey, sugar, salt, shirts, and many other objects. He would pray over them and tell us what to do with them (for example: wear it to bed, put it under your pillow, flush things down the toilet, place it in the Bible, and various directions).

Could it be that, in the background, he is working magic? Is this of God? Should christians be involved in this? Thanks for your honest answer.

Sincerely,
On The Party Line

Dear On The Party Line,

This man is definitely not of God. God tells us to test all teachers and compare them to the Scriptures (1 Jhn 4:1) because even false teachers disguise themselves as ministers of the light (2 Cor 11:14-15). This man is a great example of this.

God never teaches that we should do the things that this “prophet” is telling you to do. In fact, the Bible teaches that all behavior like this is occult and should be fled from. When the christians of the first-century converted, they burned their books of magic and fled from such occult practices (Acts 19:19). Paul tells us that all spiritual gifts have ceased (1 Cor 13:8-10). This man isn’t teaching or living by Bible principles; he has warped God’s Word for his own purposes, and that will get him in a lot of eternal trouble (Gal 1:6-8). This man has gone beyond the Scriptures (1 Cor 4:6). Don’t unwittingly become his accomplice by entertaining his false notions (2 Jhn 1:11). You are right to be concerned.

If the Bible condemns divination, then why do God’s people divine by casting lots and divine by using the Urim and Thummim? And if the Bible forbids contact with witches and wizards, then why were God’s people allowed to consult prophets and seers?

Sincerely,
Consulting The Crystal

Dear Consulting The Crystal,

The Bible condemns the worship and reverence of any god other than the one true God (Ex 20:3). Prophets and seers were sent by God (Jer 44:4) and were mouthpieces for God (2 Chr 36:12). Witches and wizards seek power and authority from false gods and demons.

Casting lots and the Urim and the Thummim are the same issue. When the Israelites cast lots, they did it in the sight of God and in the hopes that God would answer them (Josh 18:6). The Urim and the Thummim were also God-sanctioned tools. God specifically told the priest to use these two stones to help in making judgments (Ex 28:30).

The definition for ‘divination’ is ‘the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown by supernatural means’. When Israel sought knowledge in ways that God condoned – that sort of divination was permissible. What is condemned is seeking knowledge through supernatural means other than God.

Sincerely,
Italian Accessorized

Dear Italian Accessorized,

Many people wear jewelry that depicts ancient idolatrous behavior (almost all Native American artwork falls into this category). As Paul said, “we know that an idol is nothing” (1 Cor 8:4). The jewelry has no intrinsic evil to it; it is only if it is perceived as an item of worship that it becomes sinful. If people believed you were wearing the jewelry for religious purposes (or if it offended your conscience), you would have to stop (1 Cor 8:7-9).

Dear Not A Mind-Reader,

Isaiah 3:1-3 is simply telling the people that they will be deprived of all that they value. All of the classes that are considered superior by the people would be wiped out. The soothsayer was honored by the people in Jerusalem, but that doesn’t mean that God was pleased with enchanters and soothsayers. As you said, God makes it clear in other verses that He detests such occult behavior (1 Sam. 15:23).

Dear Enchanting,

Yes, Judah and Jerusalem had become a very corrupt nation, and God was deeply displeased with them at this time. Isaiah prophesied during a time when idolatry was abundant (Isa 10:11), and wickedness was everywhere (Isa 2:5-8). God was greatly displeased with the nation and was going to send them into captivity for their evil ways and ignorance of God’s laws (Isa 5:13).

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest

Dear One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest,

Superstition is wrong. Christians know that all blessings flow from God (Jas 1:17) and that if things work out for us, it is because God took care of us (Rom 8:28). Luck has nothing to do with it. Superstitions try and bring control in our lives by predicting the future through random events (black cat crossing your path, carrying a lucky rabbit’s foot, etc.)… but that is nonsense and ignorance. The Bible declares that trusting in such things is foolishness and unfit for christians. We should all do exactly what Paul said to Timothy: refuse old wives’ tales (1 Tim. 4:7).

We are studying the book of Genesis in my small group Bible study. The teacher explained that before the prophecy in Isaiah and other passages in the Old Testament about the Virgin Mary giving birth to the Messiah, Jesus, that the Virgin and the Messiah were predicted by Zodiac signs, including the Virgo sign. My small group teacher said even though he did not believe in astrology, this was how the Messiah’s birth was predicted in the early Bible times. But the Baal worshippers twisted the Zodiac concept around from what true followers of God had prophesied. As you can tell, it sounds very confusing, and he gave absolutely no Bible scriptures to back his theory. He is a very nice and sincere man, and I believe he loves God. But I read in numerous places in the Bible that anything to do with fortune telling (which Zodiac signs are) is strictly of Satan. The Bible says that Satan is the author of confusion, and this teacher was very confusing. I believe he thought he was being led by God’s spirit. As you can tell, this is a difficult question, but prayerfully you can give me some Bible scriptures to back this teacher’s theory or disclaim this teacher’s theory.

Sincerely,
Starry-Eyed Student

Dear Starry-Eyed Student,

Astrology is wrong, and so is this teacher. Astrology, mysticism, séances, horoscopes, palm reading, etc. are all sinful. In the New Testament, astrology is just as roundly condemned. Paul cast out an evil spirit that was fortune-telling (Acts 16:16-18). When someone became a christian, they confessed sorcery as evil, and many of them burned their books of the magical arts (Acts 19:18-20). If we want wisdom, we should seek it from God (Jas 1:5). All astrology, horoscopes, and the like are wrong.

Since God clearly condemns astrology, it wouldn’t make any sense that He would use astrology to predict the coming of Jesus. As you said, there aren’t any verses to back up what this teacher was saying… there is a reason for that. Regardless of what this man’s general character is, he has made a mistake. The Bible simply doesn’t back up his theory.

I have another question similar to the last question about divination. According to Genesis 44:5, Joseph uses a cup for divination. Again the Bible doesn’t give much information about this. So far I can think of two possible methods: hydromancy (which is divination using water or maybe other liquids) and/or scrying (which is an occult practice by means of seeing physically on anything clear such as glass, gemstone, crystal, and water or anything that reflects such as mirrors and, again, water). The most popular object is a crystal ball. If scrying is it, then either Joseph filled the cup with water and scryed, or if the cup can reflect, then he can scry on the cup. But I don’t know. Do you know exactly what method he used? If not, then do you know where I can get more information about this?

Sincerely,
Crying For Scrying

Dear Crying For Scrying,

The Bible gives absolutely no details on how Joseph used that cup for divining… it doesn’t even say that he does – it just mentions that Joseph’s steward was supposed to say that to Joseph’s brothers (Gen 44:1) as part of his ruse to get them to come back (Gen 44:14). The proof that Joseph actually did use the practice of divining is tentative at best. Regardless, divining is wrong today. Though God spoke to the prophets in various forms in the past, today God speaks to us through His Son’s Word (Heb 1:1-2). When we become christians, we throw away all occult practices (Acts 19:19). There is nothing to divine that the Lord hasn’t already taught us in His Word (2 Pet. 1:3).

You mentioned that you haven’t read the Bible. All faith in Christ is dependent upon the Bible (Rom 10:17). It seems like you have an honest heart and a real desire to know what is right – two things that matter a lot to God (Lk 8:15). Please feel free to ask any more questions as they come up, or if you would like us to set up a Bible study for you with a faithful church in your area, just let us know.

Is pyramidology part of or at least have anything to do with the occult? I heard about this from an article I read about Charles Taze Russell, founder of the Bible Students, which later became known as the Jehovah’s Witnesses. He preached about Armageddon and the second coming of Christ. In order to prove his point, he used pyramidology, also sometimes known as pyramid power. This predicted a certain date for these events.

Sincerely,
Watching That Tower

Dear Watching That Tower,

Pyramidology is the study of pyramids to predict future events such as the return of Christ, world wars, the formation of modern Israel, etc. This type of philosophy is scoffed at by scientists and theologians alike. Many Jehovah’s Witnesses are unaware of their founder’s beliefs in pyramidology because it was renounced and scrubbed from their history books in 1928 by Joseph Rutherford, Charles Taze Russell’s successor… yet this sort of mixed-up philosophy is part of the mindset that created the Watchtower Society.

God says that the Bible contains all that we need to know about life and godliness (2 Pet 1:3). The law of the Lord is perfect (Jas 1:25); we don’t need inscriptions on pyramids and hieroglyphic predictions to find the will of God. The gospel is God’s power for our salvation (Rom 1:16). Trust in the alignment of the pyramids is occult.

Dear Weirded Out,

People that claim they are psychic are lying and are meddling in the occult. Astrologists, those who claim supernatural powers, palm readers, etc. are not from God (Mic 5:12, Isa 2:6, Jer 27:9). Every lie is from the devil (Jhn 8:44), and the devil uses us when we promote false teaching (Matt 16:23). The only way to properly serve God is to throw off all pretenses of these dark arts and wholly serve Jesus in truth (Acts 19:18-20).

Dodging Pitchforks

Dear Dodging Pitchforks,

Start praying he is wrong. Of course, it is impossible for him to actually be the devil, but when people live sinful lives, they become children of the devil (Acts 13:10, 1 Jn 3:8). The devil has only one tool at his disposal – lies (Jhn 8:44). The greatest antidote to lies is truth.

Ask your son to reason with you and explain why he thinks he is the devil. God is a big fan of calm, rational discourse (Isa 1:18). We have no idea how likely it is for you to get your son to do this… but it never hurts to try. Many times when people have to explain their beliefs, the nuttiness of their position becomes apparent to even them. Darkness hates being brought to light (Jhn 3:20). Ask your son to explain why he believes what he does; chances are, you won’t have to prove him wrong… he’ll do that himself.

Dear Pitch The Pitchfork,

You wrote, “He thinks he can win this guy over, but I don’t think so.” The whole issue is one of wisdom and discretion. You are worried that bad company corrupts good morals (1 Cor 15:33), and your husband is trying to make sure that his light shines for all to see (Matt 5:16). Both opinions are perfectly valid and Bible-based. The question is over which one is more applicable in this circumstance… that is a matter of opinion, not doctrine. You and your husband must decide what is best, but remember that this isn’t an issue of right and wrong.

I have pondered about the idea of a messiah. It seemed to me that all cultures and religions have a savior. It seems to me quite possible that God sent His son, or Himself, or the third iteration of Himself (however one interprets the messiah) to all different peoples to lead them around the same time, essentially. And presently, Satan exploits this to make humans fight each other because we all worship the same god. So any theism works… that is what I’m trying to say and what I think.

Is Jesus Christ special, or was Isus the Egyptian messiah, or Allah, or Krishnu, or Jehovah just as good?

Sincerely,
Open Minded

Dear Open Minded,

Jesus is special, and He left no room for other gods. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through Me” (Jhn 14:6). Jesus was either the one and only Messiah – or He was a crazy lunatic. Jesus teaches that we can only have one Master (Matt 23:10) and that serving anyone else is a sin. Jesus taught that we either confess Him as the Christ, or we will be denied before God (Lk 12:8-9). Jesus cannot coexist with other gods. The Bible is clear – there can be only one (Eph 4:4-6). Isus, Allah, Krishnu, etc. are all false gods.

Dear “Pan”icked,

Pantheism comes from ‘pan’, meaning ‘all’, and ‘theos’ means ‘god’. Pantheism is the idea that there is no one all-powerful God. Instead, Pantheism teaches that a god is simply representative of all the universe and natural laws. Pantheism places its trust in the natural world and the structure of the physical universe. Pantheists find solace and peace in nature and find all their purpose in this world only. Pantheism teaches that this life is all there is… no eternity, no heaven, no hell, and no Judgment Day. Pantheism is in direct opposition to the teachings of the Scripture. From as early as Gen. 1:1, the Bible teaches that there is an all-powerful God and that we are accountable to Him. When we die, we shall all face the judgment of a just and supernatural God (Heb 9:27).

Sincerely,
A Little Glam

Dear A Little Glam,

Wearing a cross is not inherently a sin, but there are some principles that reveal it to be not a very good idea. The problem with crosses and other religious garb are threefold:

As you stated, some people use crosses, rabbit’s feet, rosary beads, etc. as forms of worship and superstition. This is wrong. God soundly condemns superstition, the occult, and idol worship (1 Cor 10:7, Acts 19:19, Matt 4:10).

God tells us that it is our character that should proclaim our Christianity – not our clothing (1 Pet 3:3-4). In an attempt to look the part of being faithful, many people wear crosses, slap “WWJD” bumper stickers on their cars, and tattoo themselves with the words “Jesus Freak”… which rarely leaves the impression they intended. Let the world know you are a christian because of who you are and how you live.

Crosses are designed to be beautiful, ornate, and elegant nowadays – which thoroughly negates the message of the cross. The cross of Christ was anything but pretty. It was a torture device intended to inflict the highest degree of pain possible upon the Son of God. We here at AYP sometimes wonder if Jesus had been killed by electrocution if everyone would have little electric chairs hanging around their necks…

Suffice it to say, wearing religious jewelry, at best, sends a mixed message – at worst, it sends the wrong message.

My 46-year-old sister has been caught up in a group of new age shamans. She has taken all the classes and is now involved in some things they call “soul retrieval” and “journeying”. Both delve into the spirit world. She claims to talk to spirits and my deceased mother. Whenever I see her, I get a very uneasy creepy feeling. I am at the point where I can’t stand to be around her or look at her. I want to be a good sister and christian, but I don’t know what I should do. She knows that I think what she is involved in is wrong and thinks it is funny. She says she believes in God, but I feel what she is involved in is not right. Not sure how to handle this anymore. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Sincerely,
My Soul Doesn’t Need Retrieving

Dear My Soul Doesn’t Need Retrieving,

If she thinks your religious differences are funny, religion is not something she is taking very seriously at this stage of her life. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me” (Jhn 14:6). Jesus is an exclusive Savior; He leaves no room for other gods or forms of worship. Your sister needs be only mildly interested in spiritual things to recognize the differences between the Bible and her occult practices. The fact that she is amused by your discomfort makes it clear that she is not interested in discussing the topic with you. Unfortunately, the only option you have is to back off and “not throw your pearls before swine” (Matt 7:6). Maybe someday she will change her attitude and be more receptive to God’s Word. Until then, be cordial but as distant as you need to be to feel that you are keeping “good company” (1 Cor 15:33).

Lucky 13

Dear Lucky 13,

Superstition is wrong. The dictionary defines ‘superstition’ as ‘a widely held but unjustified belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event, or a practice based on such a belief’. Superstition means that you are placing trust in the supernatural power of a rabbit’s foot, not walking under ladders, four-leaf clovers, etc. This is always wrong. We are supposed to place our trust in God (Ps 56:11). Superstition is a mild and socially acceptable form of witchcraft or divining. There is no difference between trusting in a lucky coin and trusting in the astrological tables. Astrology and horoscopes are wrong (Deu 4:19, 2 Kgs 23:5); witchcraft and magical arts are wrong (Acts 19:19). Superstition falls into the same category as those practices.

Sincerely,
Sweet Tooth

Dear Sweet Tooth,

Good and faithful people debate this issue all the time, but, yes, you can celebrate Halloween without sinning. Halloween does have its roots in pagan rituals. All Hallow’s Eve is often associated with evil spirits, demon worship, voodoo, and witchcraft. It is, however, also associated with happy scampering children whose most wicked intent is the desire to glut themselves on candy. New Year’s Eve could be viewed the same way. New Year’s Eve is often associated with inappropriate male and female interaction and drunkenness. It is also associated with fresh starts, reflective new beginnings, and an evening of friendship and brotherly kindness. These holidays can be a good thing or a bad thing. How you participate and your reasons for participating will make the difference.

God soundly condemns witchcraft and any magical arts (1 Sam 15:23, Acts 19:19). Anyone participating in Halloween in an occult way is sinning.

Christians are supposed to focus on pure and holy things (Php 4:8). Many of the costumes that are worn during Halloween are macabre, violent, or ghoulish. Christians should think very carefully before placing too much emphasis upon dark things.

Christians should dress modestly (1 Tim 2:9). Many costumes, especially those worn by adults, are immodest. A holiday is not an excuse for dressing in an ungodly way.

Don’t participate if it will bother your conscience. God tells us that we should always keep a pure conscience (1 Tim 1:5). If you can’t do something in faith, it is sin (Rom 14:23).

After considering these principles – go get some candy corn!

The verse you are referring to is Jhn 14:6. Here is a great example of a fork in the road for christians. Will we take the Bible at face value and accept what God says, or will we ignore certain verses in order to mold God into an image that is more suitable for us? You are absolutely right; there is no mistaking the implications of Jhn 14:6. All that do not follow Christ will not be saved. In fact, there are other verses that re-emphasize this message. Jesus said that the way to salvation was narrow, and the way to destruction was wide (Matt 7:13). He also says that many people will erroneously claim to have served God and will be turned away on the Judgment Day (Matt 7:22-23).

These verses do exclude large swaths of mankind from heaven. However, if we believe the Bible to be God’s infallible Word (and we here at AYP do – read “Who Wrote The Bible” to see why we are so convinced), then we must accept that the same loving God who would send His own Son to die for our sins has a very good reason for being so picky about who goes to heaven. Remember, God doesn’t condemn people to hell; it is our sinful choices that does that (Rom 6:23). Jehovah offers us salvation through His Son, even though we deserve death (Jhn 3:16).

Something’s Brewing

Dear Something’s Brewing,

There is no such thing as “neutral” witchcraft that won’t affect anyone. Anything that is wrong always hurts someone – even if it just hurts you. Anything that departs from God is sin (Ps 18:21). Witchcraft, by design, places your trust in the occult. Witchcraft, of any type, is always wrong (1 Sam 15:23). We must choose whether we trust witchcraft to guide our life or whether we trust God to guide it (Matt 6:24). When Paul preached in Ephesus, many of those who practiced magical arts converted, burned their books, and confessed their sins (Acts 19:17-20). That is the only proper way to deal with witchcraft… burn the behavior up and never practice it again.

What does the Bible say about the whole ‘2012 doomsday’ thing? Will it happen or not?

Sincerely,
Counting The Days

Dear Counting The Days,

Feel free to do your shopping for the holidays in 2012; the world isn’t likely to be destroyed on Dec. 21, 2012. For those of our readers unfamiliar with the 2012 doomsday schtick… we will take a moment to explain this New Age teaching. The idea that the world is going to be destroyed or transformed on December 21st (some say 23rd), 2012 is based off of the Mayan Long Count calendar. The Mayan Long Count calendar is a non-repeating calendar that was used in Mesoamerica during the height of the Mayan civilization, and because it is a non-repeating calendar (unlike the Roman calendar which repeats every 365 days), it eventually runs out of days. The last day on the Mayan Long Count calendar is December 21st, 2012. Therefore, some folks are expecting a cataclysmic change to the world order on that day.

Now that we’ve explained what it is, let’s explain what it isn’t. It isn’t right. We here at AYP are pretty sure that if God was going to hide the date of the end of the world in a conspiracy-theory fashion, He probably wouldn’t hide it in the calendar of a blood-drinking, child-sacrificing, snake-worshipping heathen culture. But, hey, maybe that’s just us…

God promises that He will return like a thief in the night (1 Thess 5:2). The whole world would be a lot better off if it stopped trying to guess the day it will end and start trying to be prepared for when it does.

Is it possible to sell your soul to God; if so, can you sell or bet it to the devil? I know it’s not in the Bible, but I feel that maybe He left it out of the Bible because it wouldn’t help anyone by knowing, or maybe it would make peoples’ lives worse who worried they had sold it and cause them to commit suicide or turn against God (not that I would ever do any of those things). Could you please help and be honest? Also, provide Biblical evidence.

Sincerely,
Money Talks

Dear Money Talks,

You provided the Bible evidence all on your own. You said, “I know it’s not in the Bible…” The Bible contains all the information we need for salvation (Rom 1:16). It also contains everything that pertains to “life and godliness” (2 Pet 1:3). The ability to sell your soul would definitely be classified under a “life issue”! Therefore, if the Bible doesn’t say you can, then it must not be possible. The Bible is the handbook to life, and it provides all the answers for how to conduct yourself in this life and prepare yourself for the next.

In fact, it would be impossible to sell something that you had already killed. We have all sinned (Rom 3:23), and the price of sin is spiritual death (Rom 6:23). You can’t sell a dead soul; you can only beg for God’s mercy that He would bless you with life. The moment you’ve sinned, the devil already has your soul; he roams around devouring them all the time (1 Pet 5:8). It is only through the grace and gift of God that we gain salvation (Rom 5:15). You cannot sell your soul to God, but He can, and is ready to, give your soul life again through Jesus. Read “What Must I Do To Be Saved” to understand how to take advantage of the gift Christ offered all mankind (Jhn 3:16).

My parents and I have a question about how to honor my deceased grandpas. We would appreciate it if you could please help give us some guidance on this.

I was raised in a non-christian family in China. One of my grandpa’s ashes is kept in a Taoist temple where all the Taoist gods are worshiped. My other grandpa has a picture at a Buddhist temple where the monks pray regularly. My parents and I accepted Jesus Christ a few years ago, but our grandpas’ ashes and picture are still at the temples.

We are unsure how to continue to show respect and honor my grandpas without violating God’s commandments. In America, it is typical that the deceased have a grave, and the loved ones go there to present flowers to honor the dead. However, in my case, I cannot go to where my grandpa’s ashes are to honor him without entering the Taoist temple full of idols and false gods. What should I do? Can I go, ignore the other gods, but just put flowers there for my grandpa? Should I not go at all?

We cannot move his ashes elsewhere either because my grandma (who is still alive) and all my other relatives are still not christians. In addition, the spot for his ashes at the temple cost a lot of money when they purchased it. They are not going to agree to relocating my grandpa’s ashes simply because of my belief and my mother’s. Both of my grandpas never heard the Gospel in their lives. They died never knowing Jesus. What shall we do now to honor them? Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Sincerely,
Temple Trouble

Dear Temple Trouble,

Every culture and country has unique issues that it presents christians with, but there is nothing new under the sun (Eccl 1:9). Your problem is with appearances. You know that the Buddhist and Tao gods are nothing at all (1 Cor 8:4). You know this, but everyone else doesn’t, and therefore, for the sake of their consciences, you must be careful how you act (1 Cor 8:10). Here are some things to consider:

Do people assume if you go to a Taoist temple that you are going to worship their gods? If so, you cannot go. Leave flowers outside the temple or give them to relatives to deliver when they visit, but make it clear that you cannot be seen as an idolater.

There are some religious sites that don’t give the impression that all visitors are of that religion. For example, take the Sistine Chapel – millions of people visit the site every year, and many of them are not Catholic at all. Visiting there does not give the impression you are Catholic; it merely gives the impression that you wanted to see the Sistine Chapel and its art. If this is the case with visiting these temples, you may be able to go without giving the impression that you are worshipping their idols. Only you can make this decision. It is a cultural issue, and you must decide how people would view your visit.

Can you in good conscience visit your grandfathers’ memorials? If we cannot do something in good conscience, for us it is sin (Rom 14:23). A bothered conscience is a sign that you believe you are doing the wrong thing, and even if that isn’t true – you have to abstain for conscience’s sake.

There are many ways to honor our deceased relatives other than visiting their graves. Putting their photos on our walls, writing memorials, re-telling stories of their lives, etc. are all viable ways of showing how much they meant to you. When someone dies, they are no longer concerned with the affairs of this world; anything you do to honor them is for the benefit of the living, not them.

After considering both your conscience and the influence you have upon others, prayerfully make a decision and stick to your guns. In the end, you serve God and not man (Acts 5:29).
