Dear Go Broncos,

No… and it is a good thing because that would really mess up my fantasy football team. The horsemen you are referring to can be found in Rev 6:1-8. The book of Revelation is a book that uses symbolic language to describe the persecution that was quickly coming upon the first-century Christians (Rev 1:1-3). The apostle John said the events were “at hand” and “shortly to come to pass”. The book of Revelation deals with the Roman persecution of the church – not the end of the world or the rise of the Denver Broncos.

Since Jesus was literate, why didn’t He write the New Testament? And why doesn’t anyone discuss the fundamental differences between the Old Testament and the New Testament? How did God talk to Adam and Eve and tell them not to eat the apple when they had never ever spoken any language and wouldn’t have known the words of ‘don’t eat the apple’ or anything else?

Sincerely,
Linguist

Dear Linguist,

When God made Adam and Eve, they were fully-grown adults with a fully-functioning language. On the same day that Adam was “born”, Adam named all the beasts of the field (Gen 2:20). Adam and Eve were fully capable of understanding language. Just like everything else that was originally created, Adam and Eve were fully-formed and mature at inception. On a separate note, God warned them to not eat the ‘fruit’ of the tree of knowledge of good and evil… it wasn’t an apple (Gen 3:6).

As far as why Jesus never wrote part of the New Testament, anything we say would be purely speculation. It wasn’t a matter of literacy; it was a matter of God’s wisdom that He didn’t have Jesus write the New Testament.

And lastly, we recommend you read the post, “Two Covenants, One God”.

Sincerely,
For The Children

Dear For The Children,

The tribulation taught by many denominations is based off of a misinterpretation of Matthew chapter twenty-four. Matt 24 is dealing with the fall of Jerusalem and destruction of the Jewish temple that would happen in 70 AD. If we carefully pay attention to the context, Jesus is talking about the Jewish temple’s destruction, not a worldwide trial thousands of years in the future (Matt 24:1-2). Jesus specifically said that the tribulation would occur within that generation’s lifetime (Matt 24:34).

There will be a day when all the faithful are caught up to meet Christ in the heavens. The day He returns (Acts 1:11), all mankind will be judged at the same time (Jhn 5:28-29). In that great day (Jude 1:6), the whole world will be burned up with fire (2 Pet 3:10-12). There will be no post-tribulation, pre-tribulation, semi-tribulation, etc.; there will only be the great Day of Judgment (2 Pet 3:7, 1 Jn 4:17). If you would like a more in-depth look at the book of Revelation, we have a series of classes on the book that can be found at sermons.mvchurchofchrist.org.

Dear That’s A Lot Of Death,

The Bible says that during the days of Noah, the whole world was violent and every heart was evil – save Noah and his family (Gen 6:5-6). The Bible gives us every reason to believe that all the people that died in the flood went to torments. After all, during the hundred years it took Noah to build the ark, he was also preaching… and no one listened (2 Pet 2:5).

Dear Looking Up,

True. When Jesus ascended into the clouds from the Mount of Olives, His apostles were left staring into the heavens with amazement (Acts 1:9). As they gazed into the sky, two angels appeared by the apostles and told them that Jesus would someday return in the same way that they had seen Him leave (Acts 1:10-11). Some day, Jesus will return and we shall see Him physically descend from the heavens to claim His own (1 Thess 4:16-18).

I would like to know the truth about Halloween.

Sincerely,
Costume On Hold

Dear Costume On Hold,

Halloween does have its roots in pagan rituals. All Hallow’s Eve is often associated with evil spirits, demon worship, voodoo, and witchcraft. It is, however, also associated with happy scampering children whose most wicked intent is the desire to glut themselves on candy. New Year’s Eve could be viewed the same way. New Year’s Eve is often associated with inappropriate male and female interaction and drunkenness. It is also associated with fresh starts, reflective new beginnings, and an evening of friendship and brotherly kindness. These holidays can be a good thing or a bad thing. Though the origins are pagan, many holidays have pagan beginnings that are no longer a part of the modern tradition. How you participate and your reasons for participating will make the difference.

God soundly condemns witchcraft and any magical arts (1 Sam 15:23, Acts 19:19). Anyone participating in Halloween in an occult way is sinning.

Christians are supposed to focus on pure and holy things (Php 4:8). Many of the costumes that are worn during Halloween are macabre, violent, or ghoulish. Christians should think very carefully before placing too much emphasis upon dark things.

Christians should dress modestly (1 Tim 2:9). Many costumes, especially those worn by adults, are immodest. A holiday is not an excuse for dressing in an ungodly way.

Don’t participate if it will bother your conscience. God tells us that we should always keep a pure conscience (1 Tim 1:5). If you can’t do something in faith, it is sin (Rom 14:23).

Sincerely,
Mrs. Prepared

Dear Mrs. Prepared,

There are a great many opinions about when the world will end, but the truth is nobody knows because God doesn’t say. God told the Thessalonians that the end would come “like a thief in the night” (1 Thess 5:2). If anything, the one thing you can count on is that it won’t be when people say it is. In truth, a christian shouldn’t worry about when the end will come… we should live every day like the end could be today.

Paul told the Thessalonians (who were quite fixated with the return of Christ) that they should live every day soberly, as if any day might be the day (1 Thess 5:4-6).

People have been using details from the book of Revelation to “predict” the end of time for centuries. Unfortunately, the book of Revelation has nothing to do with the end of time. Revelation is a book dedicated to what would “shortly come to pass” (Rev 1:1). Specifically, Revelation dealt with the coming persecution that the church of the first century was about to face. It is a figurative and symbolic book (Rev 1:1 – notice the word ‘signified’, that means ‘symbolic’) that God used to prepare those saints for the trials they had ahead of them (see our post “Left Behind” for more details). Using the book of Revelation to “forecast” the end of time is using the book out of context.

The other thing that we must be aware of is that every generation and every individual (us here at AYP included) is convinced that things are getting worse. Every generation has felt that things were getting so bad with the world that the end of the world must be soon. God warns us about the habit of constant pessimism (Eccl 7:10). There will come a time when the world is so wicked that God will destroy this earth, but that will only happen after He has given as much time as is needed for mankind to repent of their sins (2 Pet 3:9-10). Since we do not know when that day is, let us live every day with holy living and godliness (2 Pet 3:11-12).

Hello, preacher. I am a sixteen-year-old young lady who is living in fear, and I want it to stop. Ever since that whole ‘the world is going to end on May 21, 2011’, I have been scared. I’m scared that God will come at this very moment, and I had an anxiety attack over that. I’m scared of death, and I’m trying to accept it because it is a part of life, but it just scares me so much. I’m also scared that if I die, God won’t accept me in His kingdom, and I don’t want to go to hell. I feel like I’m living in fear, waiting for the worse to happen, when I want to live in faith and wait for good to happen. Please help me get over this fear.

Sincerely,
Afraid

Dear Afraid,

We fear that which we don’t feel prepared for. As you are well aware, the world didn’t end on May 21st, but someday, Jesus will return, and we need to all be ready for that day. Anyone that tells you they know when Jesus will return is lying because the Bible says He will return like a thief in the night when we least expect it (1 Thess 5:2-3). However, Jesus will return, and whether it happens two days from now or two hundred years from now, we must all be prepared to meet our Maker. There are two things that you can do to make sure you are ready for the Judgment Day. The first is to make sure you have properly obeyed the Bible and become a christian. Read “Five Steps To Salvation” for exactly what the Bible says God expects us to do to get forgiveness from our sins. After you have made sure to obey the Bible’s call for salvation, God expects us to live a life of faith where we learn and grow closer to Him (1 Pet 2:1-2). One of the most important parts of that growth process is to become involved with a faithful church that can help you learn and encourage you as you grow (Heb 10:24-25). Not all churches are faithful, and there is a lot of false teaching in the religious world (1 Jn 4:1, Matt 24:11). We would be happy to help you find a faithful congregation near you; just e-mail us at askyourpreacher@mvchurchofchrist.org.

Sincerely,
Un-Sunny Disposition

Dear Un-Sunny Disposition,

Many people believe Christmas to be a spiritual holiday, but the Bible never commands us to celebrate Jesus’ birth on December 25th (the truth is, no one knows when Jesus was born, but it was most likely in the spring or summer because the shepherds were out – Lk 2:15). Christians are commanded to remember Jesus’ death every first day of the week (Acts 20:7, 1 Cor 11:24-25)… we are never commanded to remember His birth on an annual basis. Christmas is not a biblical holiday. There is nothing wrong with celebrating it as a family holiday, but it is wrong to teach that there is a biblical foundation to it.

Christmas can be traced back to the Roman pagan holiday of Winter Solstice (also known as ‘Saturnalia’ because it was in worship of the god, Saturn). As Catholicism tried to integrate itself into a pagan Roman world, Christmas was instituted by Pope Julius I on December 25th as a way to assimilate the pagans into a Catholic worldview. In short, Christmas has never been a truly biblical holiday; it is a manmade tradition with no bearings upon your salvation.

Looking Ahead

Dear Looking Ahead,

1 Pet 3:10-12 tells us that eventually God will destroy the earth by fire. After that, He will establish a spiritual universe (heaven) where those who love Him will exist forever. Here is a list of verses that teach on that subject:

1 Cor. 15:42-50

vs. 47 says our bodies will not consist of earthly components

vs 50 says flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom

Lk 20:34-38

vs 36 says we will have bodies like angels

Jhn 14:2-4

vs 2 says we will dwell where God dwells (heaven)

vs 3 says Jesus is preparing a place for us now

2 Pet 3:10-13

vs 10 says that when God uses fire to destroy the earth, He will both destroy the works of the earth and the earth itself.

Heb 1:10-12

Dear Eyes Open,

You are right; we look forward to a glorious return of Jesus in which all mankind will face the judgment of God at once. The rapture teaching is nowhere found in Scripture; it is a fabrication created by misinterpretation and taking things out of context. It is sad to hear that even the Lord’s church has been infiltrated by this doctrine, but then again, the church has always been affected by the culture surrounding it. The rapture teaching is based off of a doctrine called ‘Premillenialism’, and you might find our posts entitled “Premillenialism” and “Up In The Air” useful. You have every right to speak out against this teaching and to point out the logics flaws that teach there will be a rapture event.

It seems like the Bible sends mixed messages. In His Word, He will not come back until certain things happen, and then Christ comes to rule the world. But then it says God could come any day now, and no one knows when. But if the Antichrist is not here and if all these events have not happened, then He will not come because He says He will come after tribulations. But we haven’t even had the Rapture yet!

Sincerely,
Putting Things In Order

Dear Putting Things In Order,

The Bible doesn’t send mixed messages, but sadly, many people have confused passages in the Bible, and that confusion has sent mixed messages to people. The entire issue of the “rapture”, tribulation events, the Antichrist, etc. stems from a teaching called Premillenialism, and it has really missed the boat. None of those events will actually occur. We have written several articles on those topics. Feel free to read “Caught Up“, “Don’t Mark Me Off“, and “Premillenialism” for specifics about what is wrong with those doctrines.

The one teaching God has really given on the subject of the end of time is 1 Thess 5:2. God says the end will come like a thief in the night. We can’t predict when it will happen, and there will be no rapture events to give us a heads up.

Where does Israel currently stand with the Lord? I ask this because many christians support Israel. Some of that support is for political reasons; Israel is an allied nation and a democracy, but most of the support comes from their belief that God still holds Israel as His chosen people. Some of this belief, I know, stems from Premillennialism and the belief that the Lord will raise up Israel in the end times. The popular Left Behind series pushed this concept. I do not subscribe to that view, so you don’t need to respond to that belief. I can’t help but to believe that God has had a role in the history of Israel. No other culture has withstood the destruction of their cultural center and identity (AD 70 siege of Jerusalem and destruction of the temple), been scattered, persecuted, almost wiped out, and managed to come back and re-establish their nation and culture.

So my question is: does God still hold Israel in His good graces? Or is He just protecting them out of His obligation to Abraham? Or is He protecting them at all?

Sincerely,
History Buff

Dear History Buff,

The nation of Israel lost God’s protection when they rejected God’s Son. Jesus says that christians are His royal priesthood and chosen race (1 Pet 2:9). Under the Old Testament, the Jewish people were God’s nation (Deut 7:6). The Jewish nation was warned that if they rejected God’s Son, they would be rejecting God, and God would make a new nation out of those who believed in Christ (Jesus explained this to the Jews in the parable of the vineyard – Lk 20:9-19). In that parable, Jesus also explained that the Jewish nation would be destroyed and abandoned by God (Lk. 20:15-16). The vast majority of Jews didn’t believe in Jesus, and therefore, they never became a part of Jesus’ kingdom. Jesus’ chosen people are those who love Him and keep His commandments (Jhn 14:15). The Jewish people rejected God because they would rather have their traditions than God’s Son (Mk 7:9).

Now, it is true that there is a nation called Israel today, but just because they occupy the same territory doesn’t mean that the Jewish nation that was destroyed in 70 AD has been re-established. The current nation of Israel has none of the things that made it special – it has no high priest, no priesthood, no Levites, no temple, and no record of genealogies to properly rebuild tribal lineages. It would be impossible for Israel to even follow the commands given by God in the Old Testament. Modern Israel is kind of like tearing down Buckingham Palace and then putting a double-wide trailer on the same property – just because you call it ‘Buckingham’, doesn’t mean it is. The name ‘Israel’ doesn’t make it the same nation.

We are not told when the end will come because God wants us to live each day prepared to meet our Maker. The Bible specifically says that the Second Coming of Christ will come like a thief in the night (1 Thess 5:1-2). Jesus will return when people least expect Him. The apostle Paul warned all christians to live their lives soberly, so they would be prepared whenever that great day might come (1 Thess 5:4-8). Whether Christ returns in your lifetime or whether you die before you go and face the judgment, live your life so that at Christ’s appearing, you shall be saved (Heb 9:27-28).

Sincerely,
Grateful

Dear Grateful,

There is a balance in the heart of a christian between rejoicing that evil has been vanquished and mourning over the death of a human being. There are plenty of examples of God’s people rejoicing in national victories. There is an entire song that was written when the Israelites celebrated the destruction and drowning of the Egyptian army in the Red Sea (Ex 15:1-21). There is always joy when the wicked are defeated (Pr 11:10). It is appropriate to be happy when evil is destroyed because it means righteousness is prevailing (Pr 28:28).

However, this also must be tempered with the fact that a human that was made in the image of God (Gen 1:27) perished. God says that it pains Him when the wicked perish (Ezek 18:23); we should also have that pain. There is a bittersweet emotion within the hearts of God’s people when an evil person dies. We rejoice that righteousness has prevailed, but we sorrow that a soul stained with sin has gone to face its Maker.

No-sama

Dear No-sama,

Osama bin Laden’s death marks a major victory for us Americans, and it brings our minds back to that fateful day on September 11, 2001 when so many perished because of the desire of that man to follow the Quran to its ultimate end – death of all the infidels (non-Muslims).

So, since so many people died so unexpectedly through Osama’s acts of terrorism, what does happen to them? All death is unexpected, meaning that none of us know when we will die. Our lives are merely vapors that quickly vanish (Jas 4:14). Because of the uncertainty of life, David prayed that God would teach him to contemplate his own death and to measure his days (Ps 39:4). Whether we die quietly in our sleep at a ripe old age or suddenly in a car crash in our early twenties… the effect is the same – we must be ready to meet our God. We all must ask that all-important question: “What must I do to be saved?”… because we never know when we will go to the judgment (Heb 9:27).

Best Guess

Dear Best Guess,

The world is definitely coming to an end, but when that end will come is known only to God. Peter tells us that the world will eventually be destroyed by intense heat, but God is waiting patiently because of His love for mankind and His desire that we all repent (2 Pet 3:9-10).

The Bible specifically says that the Second Coming of Christ will come like a thief in the night (1 Thess 5:1-2). Jesus will return when people least expect Him. That is a promise from God, so guessing when it will happen isn’t productive. The apostle Paul warned all christians to live their lives soberly, so they would be prepared whenever that great day might come (1 Thess 5:4-8). Whether Christ returns in your lifetime or whether you die before you go and face the judgment, live your life, so at Christ’s appearing, you shall be saved (Heb 9:27-28). If you don’t know what the Bible says about salvation, we recommend you read “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”.

Tally Ho

Dear Tally Ho,

No, because the horsemen aren’t literal horses and riders. The book of Revelation deals with the Roman persecution of the church – not the end of the world. Many authors, bloggers, writers, etc. have attempted to commandeer the verses in Revelation for their own purposes – mostly because it is sensational to talk about dragons, cherubim, cups of wrath, etc. It may be sensational, but it isn’t biblical to take things out of context. This video you mentioned has nothing to do with the Bible’s real teachings.

Feeling Festive

Dear Feeling Festive,

There are many holidays that people celebrate that have no Bible meaning to them – Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, etc. It isn’t wrong to celebrate holidays that aren’t found in the Bible. It is just wrong to try and turn them into something they are not.

They report to God on behalf of christians who are abused, persecuted, and mistreated (Matt 18:10).

They watch and rejoice when the lost repent (Lk 15:10).

They are watching and see when we sin (1 Cor 11:10).

They carry the souls of the faithful to Paradise (Lk 16:22).

They protect and fight over the spiritual direction of nations (Dan 10:13).

The end result is that we don’t know much about angels, but we do know that they influence the lives of all of mankind. Their very name explains their role. ‘Angel’ means ‘messenger’. Angels are the messengers of God, daily fulfilling tasks on His behalf. Wherever God’s will needs to be fulfilled, angels will not be far. In the case of Jesus – He had been given specific authority to call upon angels to protect Him at any time (Matt 26:53). The Bible never states that all christians have been given that kind of authority. However, when a righteous person prays, God listens (Jas 5:16)… and if God listens, He may very well send His angels to do His bidding on our behalf.

Magnitude 8.9

Dear Magnitude 8.9,

God didn’t create earthquakes and other disasters; natural disasters are a byproduct of sin. When God created the universe, He made everything good (Gen 1:31). The world didn’t have disease, thorns, suffering, and all the other problems we see today. Originally, Adam and Eve lived in the perfect paradise of the Garden of Eden (Gen 2:8). It is only after Adam and Eve were cast from the Garden because of their sin that all the problems we see today began. The first recorded earthquake didn’t happen until the days of Noah when all the world had turned to violence and evil (Gen 6:5-7). When the world was flooded because of sin, God broke open the fountains of the deep, which would surely have quaked the planet (Gen 7:11). The first recorded natural disaster (Noah’s flood) was caused because of sin. It was mankind’s sin that forced God to flood the Earth to save Noah’s righteous family (1 Pet 3:20). God wanted paradise and peace for mankind, but we have warped His creation because of our sin.

Our hearts go out to those in Japan in this terrible time of suffering. The devastation in Japan is a reminder that this world is a place of great turmoil and how important it is to place our faith in God while we wait for our eternal home (Heb 11:16).

Why did God choose the third day to raise Jesus up? Is there a reason for the third day?

Sincerely,
Counting

Dear Counting,

There are several reasons that the Scriptures give us for why Jesus was raised on the third day, and there may be more reasons that God didn’t tell us. The secret things belong to God (Deu 29:29)… some questions won’t get answered until we see Him in heaven. Here is what we know:

Jesus was raised on the third day because that is when He prophesied He would be raised (Lk 24:7). Jesus fulfilled every prophecy He made, right down to the details of how long He would stay in the grave.

Jesus’ burial is compared to Jonah’s time in the belly of the great fish (Matt 12:40). The Old Testament was full of parallels to Christ because the Old Testament was a tutor to lead people to Christ (Gal 3:24-25). Jonah’s three days and nights in the big fish were another example of an allusion to Christ.

Jesus’ three days in the tomb left no doubt that He was truly dead. Jesus was in the tomb so that all could witness that He did indeed fully die and was buried (Acts 10:37-40).

As we said, there are probably more reasons that the Father had in mind when He chose to leave Jesus’ body in the grave for three days, but those are the reasons He has deemed appropriate for us to know from the Scriptures.

Are we living in the end times?

Sincerely,
How Close?

Dear How Close,

Many verses that people use to discuss the end of time are used out of context. It might surprise you to know that most of the book of Revelation has nothing to do with the end of the world (even John, the writer of the book, said that the book of Revelation was full of things shortly to come to pass – Rev 1:1). So be careful in taking too much stock in what you read on the internet (which is ironic, since this is a website!) or hear through other people. What matters is what the verses say, not what people think or assume. Most stuff you read is merely conjecture. 2 Thess 2:1-2 specifically warns us about getting too caught up in worrying about when the end will come.

The clearest passages we have on the topic of the end of the world are 1 Thess 5:1-10, 2 Pet 3:3-12, and 1 Cor 15:50-58. All three of these passages clearly outline what needs to be known about the end of the world.

First, it will come like a thief, and no one will be ready for it (1 Thess 5:2, 2 Pet 3:10). If the day will only come when no one is expecting it, it only makes sense to not worry about trying to pinpoint that day since God says it is impossible!

Second, we should live every day like it will be our last (1 Cor 15:58, 2 Pet 3:11-12, 1 Thess 5:8-9). If you are always living a holy and faithful life, it won’t matter when Christ returns – a point which you made in your question. Live faithfully, and whether you live or die, you will be ready to meet your Lord (1 Thess 5:10).

Dear Seeing Codes,

If the end of the world is near, we won’t know about it until it happens. God promises that the end of the world will come “like a thief in the night” (1 Thess 5:2). As for the Illuminati – read our article “Naughty, Naughty Illuminati” for further details on that particular organization.

The last part of your question deals with the antichrist. The antichrist is not any single individual, and contrary to popular religious fiction, the antichrist has nothing to do with the end of the world. The apostle John defined an ‘antichrist’ as ‘every spirit that does not confess Jesus as God’. An antichrist is anyone that is opposed to Christ and His teachings. The world is full of antichrists. 1 Jn 2:18 says that many antichrists exist. There are many false teachers and false religious figures that teach against Jesus – all of these are antichrists.

Save The Beasts

Dear Save The Beasts,

God didn’t bring death into our world – sin did. In the Garden of Eden, all life was blessed, and everything was perfect (Gen 1:31). It was only after mankind sinned that death and suffering were introduced (Gen 2:17). All of creation was affected by sin (Gen 3:17-18). The devil would have us blame God for our suffering, but he is the one that created all the chaos and hurt (Gen 3:13).

Animal sacrifice was necessary for God to teach mankind how horrible sin is. God changed His plan because He interceded to save us from our own sins (Jhn 3:16).

Star Gazer

Dear Star Gazer,

God created light for the earth on the first day of Creation and separated the light from the darkness (Gen 1:3-5). It wasn’t until day four that God created the sun (as well as the stars and moon) as a permanent source of light in the heavens (Gen 1:14-19). This is often seen as a contradiction because everyone knows that the sun is the source of daylight here on Earth. However, it isn’t a contradiction; it is merely a surprising detail of the Creation story. God created the day and night cycles first, and later created a permanent source of light for those cycles. This is no different than a house being built using contractor-grade work lights, and as the house nears completion, the permanent electrical system is put into place, and permanent lighting is installed. We have never known a time when the earth’s light source wasn’t the sun, just like a homeowner never knows a time when the house was without permanent light fixtures. There is no contradiction, just a very impressive creation process orchestrated by an immensely powerful God.

No HMO

Dear No HMO,

Jesus’ blood covers the spiritual consequences of sin, but the physical consequences of sin still exist here on Earth. Jesus’ sacrifice paved the way for mankind to stand before God and enter His holy presence (Heb 10:17-20). Jesus reconciled faithful people with God through the cross (Col 1:19-20). The spiritual consequence of sin (eternal spiritual death – Rom 6:23) has been nailed to the cross (Col 2:14). However, the physical consequences of sin remain as a curse upon this world. Sin still destroys lives, hurts others, has cursed this world with diseases, and has rippling consequences on a global scale. Jesus gives us hope that endures to the next life, so we can persevere through the trials of this one (Heb 6:18-20).

My question is: as christians do we celebrate Christmas? And what is the significance of December 25th to Jesus Christ? Thank you!

Sincerely,
Holly And Jolly

Dear Holly And Jolly,

Sincerely,
Soothing Sibling

Dear Soothing Sibling,

Feel free to do your shopping for the holidays in 2012; the world isn’t likely to be destroyed on Dec. 21, 2012. For those of our readers unfamiliar with the 2012 doomsday schtick… we will take a moment to explain this New Age teaching. The idea that the world is going to be destroyed or transformed on December 21st (some say 23rd), 2012 is based off of the Mayan Long Count calendar. The Mayan Long Count calendar is a non-repeating calendar that was used in Mesoamerica during the height of the Mayan civilization, and because it is a non-repeating calendar (unlike the Roman calendar which repeats every 365 days), it eventually runs out of days. The last day on the Mayan Long Count calendar is December 21st, 2012. Therefore, some folks are expecting a cataclysmic change to the world order on that day.

Now that we’ve explained what it is, let’s explain what it isn’t. It isn’t right. We here at AYP are pretty sure that if God was going to hide the date of the end of the world in a conspiracy-theory fashion, He probably wouldn’t hide it in the calendar of a blood-drinking, child-sacrificing, snake-worshipping heathen culture. But, hey, maybe that’s just us… (insert friendly chuckle here)

As you mentioned, God promises that He will return like a thief in the night (1 Thess 5:2). If there is one day this year that you can be guaranteed Jesus won’t return – it is Dec. 21st, 2012. Your little brother can sleep easy.

Planning Ahead

Dear Planning Ahead,

Many verses that people use to discuss the end of time are used out of context. Be careful in taking too much stock in what you read on the internet (which is ironic, since this is a website!) or hear through other people. What matters is what the verses say, not what people think or assume (for example, the article you referenced assumes that the flood happen in the year 4990 BC… an assumption that they never prove, but their entire calculation is based off of). Most of the articles you find, including this one, that try and pin a date to the end of the world are just a slick ruse that twist Scripture. 2 Thess 2:1-2 specifically warns us about getting too caught up in worrying about when the end will come.

The clearest passages we have on the topic are 1 Thess 5:1-10, 2 Pet 3:3-12, and 1 Cor 15:50-58. All three of these passages clearly outline what needs to be known about the end of the world. It is always a good idea to look at the clearest passages first before looking elsewhere.

First, it will come like a thief, and no one will be ready for it (1 Thess 5:2, 2 Pet 3:10). If the day will only come when no one is expecting it, it only makes sense to not worry about trying to pinpoint that day since God says it is impossible! The apostles didn’t know when the Lord would come back; if they couldn’t know, we certainly can’t!

Second, we should live every day like it will be our last (1 Cor 15:58, 2 Pet 3:11-12, 1 Thess 5:8-9). If you are always living a holy and faithful life, it won’t matter when Christ returns. Live faithfully, and whether you live or die, you will be ready to meet your Lord (1 Thess 5:10).

I’ve actually never heard this idea that THE great tribulation has already happened. I’ve considered this idea with an open mind and have only gained a deep concern for those who support this theory… mostly because the temple was, of course, destroyed in 70 AD, and we know John recorded his vision around 90 AD. What good would it have been for John to prophesy on things which already took place (Rev 10:11)? Also, if you were to believe this idea, the answer to the question asked in Matt 24:3 would have been 70 AD, but since we humans are still in existence, either Jesus was lying (which He was not) or the tribulation was not fulfilled in 70 AD. Furthermore, if you carefully study the context surrounding the statement in Matt 24:34, you see Jesus was still speaking on this age of false prophets and messiahs to come. He said (in context), “This generation of false prophets and messiahs will not pass until the work of the tribulation is complete.” He was not referring to the generation that was currently alive when He said these things. Also, we all know when God says things are to happen soon (Rev 1:1), God’s judgment of time is supremely different than ours. I do not claim to be in full understanding of Revelation, but I would greatly suggest to those who support the idea you hold to prayerfully and logically reconsider their interpretation of the book of Revelation. Please reply; I am still open-minded to what you have to say. Thank for all you do.

Sincerely,
Looking Ahead

Dear Looking Ahead,

Thanks for your reply. I think we got our wires crossed somewhere. The book of Revelation doesn’t discuss the fall of Jerusalem – it discusses the persecution of christians under the Roman Empire. We agree that it is most likely that John wrote Revelation after 70 AD. However, Matt. 24 does refer to 70 AD, and Jesus even clarifies that is what He is talking about in Matt. 24:2 when He mentions the stones of the temple would be torn down (something that happened in the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD). You referenced Matt 24:3; it is important to note that the words “end of the world” found in some translations are not technically correct. The word ‘world’ is literally ‘age’. It isn’t the word ‘kosmos’ which is what is normally used for ‘world’ throughout the Bible. Jesus was telling them that the end of the Jewish age was about to occur and that there would be certain signs they should watch for. As for your reference to Matt 24:34, the words ‘false prophets and messiahs’ aren’t in that verse. All it says is “this generation shall not pass away until all these things are accomplished” – we don’t know what translation you are using, but those words that prove your point simply aren’t in the text of the major translations of the Bible. Matthew 24 is dealing with 70 AD (and Jesus said those things before 70 AD); Revelation is a separate topic.

One other thing, you mentioned that you don’t have a full understanding of Revelation. Here is our challenge to you. Listen to the series of classes we linked to you on that book (for our readers, that link is here). After listening to the classes, feel free to write in with any objections you have to the logic used in the teaching. We would happily welcome your criticism. If we are wrong, we want to change.

At what point in The Great Tribulation are we, the church, raptured? I struggle to understand who this “multitude” mentioned in Revelation chapter 7 is and at what time they arrived. Is there any information from the Bible that gives us any idea of when we will be raptured? Do we suffer through the tribulation with the unsaved? Do we all die as martyrs? Do we get “caught up” before the Tribulation begins?

Sincerely,
Looking Ahead

Dear Looking Ahead,

The word ‘rapture’ means ‘caught up’ in Latin. The term ‘rapture’ is used to describe an event that many think will take place right before the days of tribulation in Revelation. The problem with this theory is that it is wrong. There will be a time when all christians will be caught up into the air to be with Christ – the end of time (1 Thess 4:14-18). The book of Revelation doesn’t describe events in the future; it describes events in the past. The book of Revelation deals with problems that the church was to “shortly” see come to pass (Rev 1:1).

Furthermore, the tribulation taught by many denominations is based off of a misinterpretation of Matthew chapter twenty-four.

(This question is a follow-up to “Constantinian Shift”)

I am glad you have corrected your statement about Constantine “forcing” all to convert to Christianity. There is a very fine line between statements of historical truth and statements meant to lead a reader to a conclusion by implication and exaggeration. My only issue with your line of reasoning has to do with how you determine what is historically reliable and what is not. You cannot have things both ways. When presented with historical sources and actual named witnesses to a questioner laying a foundation of an organized church before Constantine, you rejected the history outright and claimed it was contradictory and unreliable (see your response to “A History Of Error” in the Catholic archive). Then in response to other topics (canon of New Testament and Constantine’s activities), you relied on extra-biblical historical accounts. So on one hand, you are relying on history to make some points, while on the other hand, you are rejecting history to disprove other points. I am hoping you see this contradiction as I really don’t want you guys to keep sawing off the very branch you are sitting on in an attempt to influence your readers away from a faith you don’t agree with. Why do you accept the testimony of the witnesses to Constantine’s subtle ways of influencing conversion? What makes you think those extra-biblical accounts are reliable? How do you know the early church historians (bishops and clergy) that attest to an organized church before the famous edict are unreliable?

Sincerely,
Cite Your Sources Please

Dear Cite Your Sources Please,

We appreciate your concern over our use of extra-biblical history. Let’s see if we can quickly clarify. We use historical resources as reliable sources in regards to Constantine because that is the ONLY history of Constantine we have. The Bible never directly deals with Constantine; therefore, we are left to use secular history as our only guide. You may have misunderstood our statements about Constantine – we do believe Constantine forced people to obey his state-run religion. As we mentioned in the last post, he forced them by using inducements.

The times that we have stated that the early church historians were being unreliable or contradictory is when we do have a biblical account to compare it to. The Bible is always the first and foremost guide in church history, and the Bible soundly condemns Catholicism’s practices. Therefore, people who lived and taught anything in opposition to the Bible are wrong, no matter whom they are. There were early church historians that were beginning to move toward the Catholic way of functioning before the era of Constantine (Constantine simply is the historical demarcation point when things began to quickly move downhill), but the fact that early church writers taught things contradictory to Bible teachings discredit them in doctrinal matters. We can trust early historians in secular history unless they prove otherwise (i.e. contradict the majority of historians); we can trust early historians in religious history unless they prove otherwise (i.e. contradict Scripture). Hopefully, that gives you some clarity as to why it seems like we are “cherry picking” the history that we want. Everything gets compared to Scripture – even early church writers.

In a previous post, you stated “Both the Roman Catholic church and the Eastern Orthodox church trace their history back to the days of Caesar Constantine. …Constantine made Christianity the national religion and forced all people to join it. By forcing people to join Christianity, Constantine removed all traces of the volunteer Bible-based faith that Christ died for.”
The edict of Milan issued by Constantine only proclaimed religious toleration in the Roman Empire. There is no historical record of Constantine “forcing” anyone to become christian. Constantine was actually against conversion by coercion: “It is one thing voluntarily to undertake the conflict for immortality, another to compel others to do so from fear of punishment”. As a student of history, could you please clarify for me your historical sources for your previous statements regarding this period of Christianity?

Sincerely,
Cite Your Sources Please

Dear Cite Your Sources Please,

You are correct that the edict of Milan only proclaimed toleration and that Constantine is on record as saying that conversion by coercion was a bad thing, but like all good politicians, what Constantine said and what he did were two different things.

Constantine issued the edict of Milan legalizing Christianity and then subsequently began to provide “inducements” to conversion. These inducements included:

Government-conferred benefits for church leaders (this included immunity from military service)

Cash gifts to congregations

Building elaborate buildings for churches

Christians received career advancements within the government over and above pagans

Exile of preachers that upset him (even subsets of Christian beliefs – such as Arianism)

These inducements are well-documented in various sources, but one good book to look at is “Christianizing the Roman Empire” by Ramsay MacMullen. It is also important to note that the edict of Milan, which legalized tolerance, was only the beginning of a movement to make Christianity a state religion. The edict of Milan promoted tolerance in 313 AD, but by 380 AD, emperor Theodosius made Christianity the official state religion, and in 392 AD, all other worship was made illegal. Constantine was the tip of the spear for a movement to turn Christianity into a government entity (eventually Catholicism) over the next hundred years.

I love Christmas, and I don’t celebrate it as a religious holiday, but a cultural one (because it’s not in the Bible). However, I love Christmas music, but when the hymns which are associated with Christmas come on with instruments, I want to make sure I’m not sinning by hearing/singing the songs. I know I’m not listening to them with the intent to praise God, so my question is… is it okay to listen to Christmas hymn music? Or when the hymns come on, should I change it?

Sincerely,
In The Christmas Spirit

Dear In The Christmas Spirit,

This is an issue that good brethren disagree on and certainly falls within the category of being an individual conscience issue. Some brethren believe that it is impossible to listen and sing along with religious Christmas music without it being a form of worship; others feel that there is a distinction between listening and singing for your own personal enjoyment and actively worshipping. There are good points to be made on both sides of the argument. There are several things to consider before you decide to listen or to refrain:

Rom 14:5 says that in cases such as these it is important that “each man be fully assured in his own mind”. Whatever you decide to do, make sure that it is a conscious decision, not just a reaction to peer pressure or the feelings of the moment. Honestly look at yourself and ask the question, “Do I believe I can do this without feeling like I am sinning?” It is not always easy to discern the line between singing along as a form of entertainment and singing along as worship. You must decide for yourself if your behavior crosses the line between personal enjoyment and active participation in a form of worship God doesn’t desire.

Can you do this with a clear conscience? If you cannot feel completely convinced in your mind that what you are doing is acceptable before God, you have to refrain. Whatever cannot be done in faith is sin (Rom 14:23). Even if you rationally believe that you can do something, if your conscience is still bothered – it is best to avoid the activity. God wants all of us to listen and obey our conscience (1 Tim 1:5).

Is your behavior hurting others’ conscience? There may be times where you cannot listen to certain music for the sake of others. If something you are doing is offensive or a stumbling block to other brethren, it is always best to refrain from doing it while they are there (1 Cor 8:11-12). We must always consider how our choices are perceived by others… as well as how we personally feel.

If you factor in all three of those categories, you will be able to make a sound decision as to how you personally should proceed.

More Trick Than Treat

Dear More Trick Than Treat,

Good and faithful people debate this issue all the time, but, yes, you can celebrate Halloween without sinning.

After considering these principles – go get some candy corn!

An Ohio Tea Party group recently distributed a questionnaire for candidate endorsements, and it suggested politicians should not worry about global climate change because it is up to God to regulate carbon in the atmosphere.

I am wondering what position you and/or your church take on this notion that carbon regulation is up to God, and not governments, and therefore, global climate change should not be addressed or taught in schools.

Do you think people are responsible to care for our habitat? Or will God take care of the environment?

Sincerely,
Mr. Green

Dear Mr. Green,

Politics and religion often overlap, but it is important to remember that they are not synonymous. The Bible says nothing about whether or not global climate change (the latest buzz phrase for global warming) is a scientifically viable issue or not… we leave that up to the scientists to debate.

The Bible says God has delegated a great deal of authority over this earth to mankind, and that means we have a real responsibility to not mistreat this planet (Gen 1:28) – but that doesn’t mean we have total responsibility over what happens to this world. God also says that this world is held together by His might (Col 1:16-17). Mankind cannot destroy this earth prematurely… God decides the final long-term fate and timing of this planet’s demise (2 Pet 3:10-11).

People should be responsible in how we behave, but the notion that we are destroying the earth is rubbish… God is the only one who can destroy the universe.

All animals were created by God and for God’s pleasure (Col 1:16). Just like humans create and then destroy things (you probably threw away lots of trash this week that at one point were brand new products)… God uses His creation according to His pleasure and purposes. Why God has allowed certain animals to become extinct and allowed others to survive is a matter of His choosing. Furthermore, God has given humans a certain level of authority over this planet (Gen 1:27-28). How we treat this planet has an effect upon the animal kingdom as well. Though God has the final say on all things, He has allowed us a great deal of freedom to shape this planet and world according to our desires. Our choices have a major impact upon what animals do, or don’t, become extinct.

The Bible gave us signs of the end, and we had almost all of the signs. What do you think? I am just waiting for the rapture.

Two Years To Go

Dear Two Years To Go,

But, hey, maybe that’s just us…

You are right; God promises that He will return like a thief in the night (1 Thess 5:2). As you mentioned, the world is full of many unprepared people living sinful lives. We would all be a lot better off if we stopped trying to guess the day everything will end and started trying to be prepared for when it does. We also noticed that you used the term “rapture” – we recommend you read the article “Caught Up”; it should help clear up some of the misconceptions about that term.

Recently, given all the major events that have been happening here in the U.S., I have gotten a sense that hate and intolerance are swirling up around all of us and that a lot of us who are christians are not seeing it. I know what the Bible says about some of these issues, but the way that some of these issues are handled just makes me very sad, and I wonder if God would agree with how they are handled. I hope I’m making sense; I’m just very, very conflicted and frankly becoming very disillusioned with the speed in which this hate is building. I feel that just because a person is of a different orientation, a foreigner, or has different religious views, it doesn’t give us the right to treat them like they are not humans. Like I said, I know what the Bible says about these matters, but I guess my question is: does it make me a bad person to be a christian and feel opposed to wanting to condemn these people?

Sincerely,
Peace Pusher

Dear Peace Pusher,

The idea of religious tolerance is a new age concept, not a biblical one. Jesus had zero tolerance for false religion (Matt 23:15). Jesus taught that there is only one way to heaven – Him (Jhn 14:6). Those who don’t serve God already stand condemned by the Scriptures (Jhn 3:18).

Christians should always be careful with the language and attitude they take towards others (1 Pet 2:12). Christians should never be mean or evil with their speech. Our words should always be seasoned with grace (Col 4:6). However, being kind doesn’t mean tolerating false religion, homosexuality, abortion, etc. It is possible to avoid hate and also draw a line in the sand… Jesus did.

Sincerely,
Changing The Topic

Dear Changing The Topic,

People should always seek to be tactful in religious debate, but from a Biblical viewpoint, every mosque is appalling. The Muslim religion stands opposed to the Bible and Jesus. Jesus said that He is the only way to God (Jhn 14:6), and the apostle Paul condemned all false prophets (Gal 1:8)… including Mohammed. That is God’s judgment on the religion of Islam.

The building of a mosque at Ground Zero has political and emotional ramifications that can be talked about for hours, but the Biblical ramifications are simple – Islam is a false religion.

Dear Watching The Time,

If we were living in the last days… we wouldn’t know it. The Bible specifically says that the Second Coming of Christ will come like a thief in the night (1 Thess 5:1-2). Jesus will return when people least expect Him. The apostle Paul warned all christians to live their lives soberly, so that they would be prepared whenever that great day might come (1 Thess 5:4-8). Whether Christ returns in your lifetime or whether you die before you go and face the judgment, live your life so that at Christ’s appearing, you shall be saved (Heb 9:27-28). If you don’t know what the Bible says about salvation, we recommend you read “What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

Dear Citizen Sorrow,

It isn’t wrong to travel to Las Vegas, but many of the reasons people go to Las Vegas are sinful. Gambling and prostitution are two of the biggest draws to Las Vegas, and both are wrong. Prostitution is clearly condemned in the Scripture (Pr 23:27-28), and gambling is also spoken against (read “Gambling” for further details). Like righteous Lot living in Sodom and Gomorrah, righteous people can (and do) live in Las Vegas, but they are constantly vexed by the evils they see (2 Pet 2:7).

Dear Flooded With Emotion,

Because God loved the people of the world – not the physical planet. The Great Flood of Genesis 7 was an effort to give mankind a second chance. God took the last righteous people on the planet and saved them from the corruption of a completely wicked generation (Gen 6:5-6). God saved the eight people of Noah’s family through those floodwaters (1 Pet 3:20). The rest of that generation was beyond redemption, so God (in His infinite love) saved those who could be salvaged.

I received your answer and thank you. My question… you said there is nothing wrong with celebrating christmas as a family holiday, but it is wrong to teach it as a biblical holiday. If it’s wrong to teach it as a biblical tradition, then why would God approve of it? Also, if this is a tradition that the Romans made because they worship the god of Saturn, then I know God would not approve because He is a jealous God and says not to worship any other gods but Him (Ex 20:3).

Did you know that more people commit suicide around christmas than any other holiday… because people are afraid that they will not have the right present or won’t have enough money to buy one? And every year, your family expects you to get them a gift or material of some sort, and if you don’t, they get mad and angry at you. Christmas is not about Jesus; it’s all about money and profit. When people get up on December 25th to celebrate Christmas, the first thing they do is run to the presents and materials. They don’t bow down and thank God for what they already have. This is a holiday that brings more hate than it does love. Why? Because God does not approve of it.

Sincerely,
The Grinch

Dear The Grinch,

We have many holidays that don’t have biblical origins. Memorial day, Valentine’s Day, and Thanksgiving are all examples of non-biblical holidays. If Christmas is treated as a voluntary holiday with presents, jovial family get-togethers, etc. – then there is nothing wrong with it.

However, if people are using Christmas to worship Saturn (which is highly unlikely nowadays) or treating it as a biblical necessity, then it is certainly wrong. Your other concerns about Christmas are issues of greed and love. God makes it clear that He hates it when we are fixated with material things (Lk 16:13). The way many people treat the holidays is indicative of a growing dysfunction in our culture. Many people forget that our lives consist of more than our possessions (Lk 12:15).

Why does the church not teach when Christmas first started? They only teach that it’s Jesus’ birthday. But they don’t teach who actually started Christmas. Everything that I have been studying about Christmas has nothing to do with Jesus; it’s all about money. When I type ‘what is Christmas’ into a search engine, Santa Claus is the first thing that is shown, not Jesus. Congress was actually started on December 25th, 1870, and America decided to make that the Christmas federal holiday. Jesus was never born around December. All my life, I have been told lies about Christmas. Can someone out there tell me the truth about Christmas?

Sincerely,
The Grinch

Dear The Grinch,

Hermit Helper

Dear Hermit Helper,

What God does with the African tribe that is isolated from society is between Him and them. We know that God doesn’t hold people accountable for things that they cannot do (2 Cor 8:11-12). We also know that He says all mankind is without excuse because the Creation speaks of His greatness (Rom 1:20). We also know that God has a certain expectation that we will seek Him out (Matt 7:7-10). All of these principles must be balanced out when considering the fate of isolated peoples.

Ultimately, the Lord is judge… a righteous one (2 Tim 4:8). The Lord doesn’t desire any of the wicked to perish (Ezek 18:23). He will fitly and properly judge all mankind.

Sincerely,
Rapt Attention

Dear Rapt Attention,

Dear History Buff,

Your question brings up a common misconception. Most churches of Christ in America can trace their roots back to a movement in early American history commonly known as ‘the Restoration Movement’. It is called the Restoration Movement because those spearheading the movement wanted to restore worship back to the ways of the New Testament. They wanted to go back to the Bible for all of their answers and practices. This is exactly what the Lord calls us to do (1 Cor 4:6, Josh 1:7, Jhn 14:6, Rev 22:18-19).

The misconception is that these were the first men to do this. That is a myth. America is not the first country to contain people who wanted to go back to God’s Word for all that they said and did. Even within the Bible, we see people seeking to restore Bible-based worship. King Josiah found a copy of the Law and told the people to return to God (2 Kgs 22:10-13). Jesus told the Jews to go back to the Scriptures and understand what God was telling them (Mk 12:24). Jesus warned against making traditions that usurped the authority of the Scriptures (Mk 7:10-13).

The church has never been destroyed, and throughout many, many ages (including the darkest ages of Catholicism), there have been people who have sought to honestly and humbly serve God. The Restoration Movement in America is merely one story of people that have sought to put God’s Word back into its rightful place. The Bible is the seed of the church (Lk 8:11). When a group of people commits itself to do what the Bible says – no more and no less – a church is formed. Many of these congregations in America use the name ‘church of Christ’ because it is a Biblical name (Rom 16:16), and it is a recognizable name to other christians who are looking for faithful churches… but make no mistake, the Restoration Movement in America wasn’t the first (and it won’t be the last) group of people that wanted simple Christianity.
